My Math Jam Reflection |
Math Jam was a very fun experience for me. Not only did I learn a lot about college, I also made ten new friends. On the first day, I came in thinking that it was a really lame thing to go to. I thought I would sit there all week by myself and not make any new friends. When they put us in groups, I thought the people I were put with were interesting and I also hoped they weren't a quiet bunch. They definitely weren't. By the second day, we were all very talkative towards one another and our tutor, Julius, was definitely the best tutor anyone could ask for. He was the one that brought me closer to my ten new, good friends. We all immediately exchanged phone numbers, instagrams, and snapchats. We also did a lot of fun experiments like measuring the slope of a specific item on campus, and also the pendulum project, which we measured how long it took for the ball to swing once. Everyday that week, we sat in on one workshop after lunch. The different workshops we sat through were high school vs. college, career, health and wellness, and a few more. College is definitely a lot more different than high school! You have a lot more free time, way more homework, and you definitely get to meet a lot of really cool people who are in the same shoes as you, being the newbie. I always planned to go to college, but after attending math jam, I realized how important going to college really is. It can get you really far, and as long as you try, you will accomplish anything you want. I also learned how to do a lot of things in math jam that will help me get through my first year, like learning how to use Canvas and making this ePortfolio. I also learned about the Teaching Learning Center (TLC) and that it's only open for first year pathways, and we can get tutoring, meet with our coach or do homework. It's great to know that there's a support group when we need it.
I am so grateful for all the people I met in math jam. I met a wonderful professor, Professor Jens Kristen, who taught us how to read and write numbers in Babylonian, Egyptian, and Mayan. I met a great tutor, Julius, who was patient enough to put up with my group. Most importantly, I met the best group! I never knew I'd get so close to a group of people who I just met. We bonded a lot by hanging out for lunch everyday and also hanging out outside of campus. We got so close that we decided to make our very own club. I've never really had close friends until I met these wonderful group of talented people. I want to thank math jam for being a great opportunity for me to learn more about college and opening up my perspective of how it feels like to finally be an adult. |
